Tips to Encourage Children to Exercise

At any age, it’s important to be physically active to stay healthy. It is recommended that children between the ages of 5 and 17 do at least 60 minutes each day of moderate to vigorous physical activity. However, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and Australian Bureau of Statistics has found that in Australia 2 in 3 (70%) of children do not meet these guidelines. For Sydney kids, martial arts such as BJJ, Karate and Kickboxing provide a fun way to improve physical and mental fitness whilst learning valuable skills that are transferable into everyday life. Here we will look at some great ways to get your kids out from behind their screens and encourage them to exercise daily so that they can live a healthier life.

Be An Active Role Model

Children watch and mimic the habits of their parents. Find activities you enjoy, whether it’s tennis, cycling or a brisk walk around the streets, and try to do it for least 30 minutes, 5 days a week. When your children see you enjoying physical activity, they will be more likely to be active and stay active as they grow up.

Involve the Whole Family

A family that exercises together, stays healthy together. Family bike rides, a game of backyard cricket, frisbee at the park on your daily walk – doing activities as a family is one of the best ways to foster a love of exercise from a young age. Volunteer to coach your child’s netball or football team while they play or sign up as a family for a class in self-defence. Sydney families are spoilt for choice with the amount of sporting facilities, leisure centres, parklands, and team activities available!

Emphasise Fun

If it’s not fun, chances are kids won’t do it. So, research fun activities that you know they will enjoy, this is the best way to get a child to stick with something. If they like music and dancing, blast some music and create a dance party; if they like strategy, set up some backyard games like lawn bowls; buy a cheap racquet and ball and hit the tennis courts or enrol them in a club or sport so they learn new skills. Invite their friends and make it a social activity or ask their friends what sports they participate in and see if they want to join in too.

Create Healthy Competition

Nothing motivates more than a little competition. Why not make a contest between you and your children to see who can run faster, or do more steps per day or skip for longer? Winners get bragging rights (and maybe even a prize!). Track your results and progress to set new goals and challenges every couple of months.

Try Something New

Don’t be afraid to think outside the square. Look for exciting activities that your child may not be aware of, such as Ninja courses at a gymnastics centre or rock climbing at a local indoor facility. Taekwondo, Karate, BJJ and combat sports may be great for those kids who like a challenge and thrive on mastering new skills.
